Pearls: the classics of the jewelry box

What makes pearls so appealing? We asked the experts at Atelier Torbjörn Tillander, and they revealed why pearls have become popular and how to identify a high quality pearl.

The popularity of pearls has lasted for centuries, with them being considered one of the first gemstones used. Among the most famous pearls is La Peregrina, whose story dates back almost 500 years. This perfect teardrop-shaped pearl has adorned the necks of royal families and world leaders, and in 2011, it was auctioned for an incredible $11 million. What makes pearls so fascinating?

There are many types of pearls, so everyone can find their favorite. You can choose white Akoya pearls for a young girl, dramatic Tahitian pearls for a dark-haired person, or stunning South Sea pearls. Tahitian pearls come in a variety of colors, such as peacock, which combines a dark gray base with green and red highlights. Additionally, pearls come in various sizes and shapes, each one being a unique natural product.

Pearls are currently very trendy. Tina Tillander assures that pearl fashion is not waning. Now pearls are boldly worn as part of everyday attire, and even men prefer classic pearl necklaces. Statement pearl necklaces are in – more is more! You can wrap two or three pearl necklaces around your neck and pair them with a casual t-shirt and jeans.

Saltwater pearls are also eco-friendly, as pearl oysters live in clean waters. Only healthy oysters produce beautiful pearls, so pearl farmers take care of the well-being of water bodies. Before a pearl is harvested, the oyster is touched about 500 times to closely monitor its condition.

The pearls in the Atelier Torbjörn Tillander collection are carefully selected. Tina and Jenny attend trade shows to find new gemstones and pearls, some of which are unique pieces and others are high-quality pearls. All pearls used are cultivated; nowadays, natural pearls are only used in rare cases, and they come with a gemological certificate with X-ray images.

The appearance and quality of pearls depend on many factors, such as size, shape, color, and luster. Large and interesting shapes are highly valued, and a perfectly round pearl is the most valuable. Strong luster indicates the quality and durability of a pearl, while a smooth surface makes the pearl beautiful. Color choices vary by region and fashion trends. Atelier Torbjörn Tillander uses natural-colored saltwater pearls and handles freshwater pearls with care, as they are often dyed and treated to enhance their shine.

Quality is one of Atelier Torbjörn Tillander's core values, evident in all aspects of its operations from goldsmithing to customer service and pearl selection. Welcome to explore our extensive pearl collection at Kluuvikatu!
